Residents of El Dorado County and the City of Placerville are invited to help choose the design of an innovative new “Parklet” to be installed on Main Street in Downtown Placerville from May to September 2017. “A Parklet is a small public area that transforms a former parking space into a public recreation area,” explained Olivia Byron-Cooper, manager with the El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA), Public Health Division. “Parklets encourage physical activity through non-motorized transportation by providing pedestrians with amenities like public seating, landscaping, art and bicycle parking.”

Members of the public may see and vote online for one of three proposed conceptual designs for the Parklet at from January 20 through January 29, 2017. Local high school students developed the proposed designs. The winning design will be revealed on January 31.

The Parklet is a demonstration project sponsored by the Public Health Division, in partnership with the City of Placerville, and funded through an award from the Health Officers Association of California and donations of time and materials from individuals and businesses in the community. The Parklet will occupy one parking space in Downtown Placerville (specific location to be determined). It will be open to the public and smoke-free. “We are excited to see this project become a reality,” said Byron-Cooper. “This type of innovative community space helps support healthy living and enjoyment for all residents.” Similar projects have been successful in other communities across California.
