The Mental
Health Division of the El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA)
is offering a free training series called "Youth Mental Health First
Aid" this month in El Dorado Hills. The training will be held on Saturday
mornings, April 23 & 30, 2016, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity
Parish located at 3115 Tierra De Dios in El Dorado Hills. The training is free
and open to community members. Space is limited; registration is required.
Youth Mental
Health First Aid is a public education program that covers the unique risk
factors and warning signs of mental health problems in youth ages 12 to 18. The
program emphasizes early intervention and teaches people how to help a youth
who is in crisis or experiencing a mental health or substance use
challenge. Role-playing exercises and simulations are included in the
training to show how to assess a mental health crisis, to provide initial help,
and to connect youth to appropriate professional help, peer, social and
self-help care.
The class is
designed for teachers, coaches, parents, juvenile justice professionals and
others who regularly interact with youth. "This class will teach a
specific five-step action plan for helping youth in crisis," said Nora
Mays, Mental Health First Aid instructor with HHSA. "We encourage
those with an interest to attend."
