During
the month of April 2016, as part of a statewide effort, El Dorado County Health
and Human Services Agency staff and volunteers will be assessing the
availability and marketing of tobacco, alcohol and food products in stores that
sell tobacco. The survey is part of the Healthy Stores for a Healthy Community campaign and will be
conducted by trained staff and volunteers in approximately 160 stores in El
Dorado County.
The Healthy
Stores for a Healthy Community campaign is a collaborative effort between
tobacco use prevention, nutrition and alcohol prevention partners across
California. The campaign aims to improve the health of Californians through
changes in stores, and to educate people about the ways in-store product
marketing can influence consumption of unhealthy products.
“This
survey will help us learn which products are available and promoted in our
communities,” said Christy White, Supervising Health Education Coordinator of
the El Dorado County Tobacco Use Prevention Program. “Surveyors are particularly
interested in how products are currently marketed to youth, and would also like
to ensure that more healthy alternatives are available. We are looking to the
stores to be our partners, and are confident that by working together we can
mutually benefit and make El Dorado County a healthier place to live.”
The
survey results will be compiled later this year and will provide insight into
the retail store environment in El Dorado County. For more information
about the survey, please contact White at (530) 621-6142.
