Universal Wastes
Universal wastes are common items which because of their chemical content are considered hazardous wastes. Universal wastes pose a relatively low risk to the user when handled in a normal manner. However, if these items are damaged or disposed of into a landfill they can release their hazardous contents and pose a risk to human health and the environment.
Universal Wastes include:
The fluorescent lights, thermostats, batteries and e-waste generated by households can be disposed free of charge at the HHW permanent collection centers.
Electronic Waste
Electronic Waste or E-Waste is any unwanted electronic device or Cathode Ray Tube (CRT). E-Waste is classified as Universal Waste. E-Waste often contains hazardous materials, such as lead and mercury. Examples of E-Waste items include (but are not limited to) the following:
- CRT devices including older televisions and computer monitors
- LCD desktop computer monitors and laptop computers
- LCD televisions, Plasma televisions
- Cash registers and oscilloscopes containing CRTs
- Computers, computer keyboards and other peripherals
- Telephones, cell phones, and answering machines
- Portable DVD players with LCD screens
- Stereo equipment, radios, tape and CD players/recorders
- Video cassette recorders, portable DVD players with LCD screens
- Calculators
- Microwaves
Recycling Information for Businesses
