Hepatitis C
What is Hepatitis C?
"Hepatitis" means inflammation of the liver. It also refers to a group of viral infections that affect the liver. The most common types are
Hepatitis A,
Hepatitis B, and
Hepatitis C. Hepatitis C is a liver disease caused by the Hepatitis C virus (HCV). Many people with the disease have no symptoms and are not aware they are infected. 80% of infected people do not clear the virus from their bodies and become chronically infected. Chronic infections can lead to more complex effects, such as severe and irreversible liver damage and liver cancer.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that there are 4 million HCV cases nationwide. HCV is among the two most commonly reported diseases in El Dorado County, with a five year average of 100 cases per 100,000 county residents.
